Project information

Project: Dust removal to meet Universal Feedstuffs Assurance Scheme (UFAS) standards
Client: AE Hilton & Son
Products: SkipVAC

Project Background

AE Hilton & Son produces animal feeds in the greenest way possible, and specialises in equine feeds because horses are particularly prone to respiratory risks.

Over time this dust builds up in all sorts of places around the feedstuffs areas, so keeping the premises and equipment clean is a constant part of the housekeeping regime.

The solution

Whilst AE Hilton & Son have used smaller suction equipment before, it was a very laborious process and the results were only adequate at best.

John Hilton who runs the company chose a free demonstration of the SkipVACs capabilities. Once he saw what it could do, it was an easy decision to hire a SkipVAC and give his premises a really good deep clean from top to bottom.

“With the SkipVAC, we’ve been able to give the whole premises a real cleaning up, and it really helps to back up our whole approach to making animal feedstuffs in a greener and more environmentally-friendly way, when visitors can see premises that are really clean and well managed.”

“The machine’s performed very well, and it’s far more effective than using brooms, shovels and barrows. It’s also easy to move the SkipVAC with our forklift to wherever we need it. We’ll definitely be hiring one again to keep our premises really clean. It’s not just about complying with all the UFAS and COSHH regulations and guidelines, it’s about showing anyone that we mean what we say about producing animal feeds in the best and greenest way possible.”

John Hilton

Proprietor, AE Hilton and Son

Project information

Project: Dust and Spillage Solution
Client: Cory Environmental
Products: DISAB Central Vacuum

Project Background

Cory Environmental was keen to improve its general housekeeping practices at its recyclables plant in Wandsworth, London, and to meet and surpass Environmental Agency standards. Broom, brush and barrows were used to deal with dust and spillages creating greater airborne dust and causing the plant to stop whilst the dust was dealth with.

The solution

DISAB provided an on-site consultation and designed & installed a bespoke centralised vacuum system. Providing a flexible, reliable and effective solution that means an end to plant downtime and major savings in time and money and healthier working environment that meets European Standards.

“We used to use brooms and brushes, and had to stop the plant for at least an hour every day in order to deal with the dust. It just wasn’t effective, especially at a really busy plant like this which needs to run five days a week.”

“The installation of the DISAB centralised vacuum system has made all the difference. We can go to any part of the plant wherever the spillages are heaviest, or wherever the dust needs to be removed. All we have to do is to plug in the flexible suction hose to a conveniently located inlet valve, and it’s a simple job to remove whatever dust or waste needs to be dealt with.”

“It’s completely different now, and the levels of housekeeping and tidiness are much higher, and much more obvious to everyone who comes to work here. All the vacuumed waste goes to residual bins via the centralised pipework system, and is usually able to be recycled back into the process.”

Richard Edwards

Transfer Station and MRF Manager, Cory Environmental

Product Features

DISAB’s centralised systems have two particular features that make them significantly more effective for their operators. First, is a system called Smart which allows operatives to set a large number of variables for everyday usage.

Second, there is a self-cleaning system for the filters based on the propriety ATM valve. This is designed into the DISAB PacVacTM 37 Kw power plant that generates the suction power for the 300 metre long pipework system and its 30 inlet valves that serve seven different mezzanine levels throughout the MRF plant. The ATM valve reverses the air pressure through the filters, cleaning them and the air volume is more than sufficient to do an effective cleaning job several times a day.

These features combined with DISAB equipment’s reliability and longevity make the centralised vacuum systems highly efficient from an operator’s perspective.

Product Overview

Our powerful central vacuum systems can be linked to a variety of vacuum units and a range of discharge methods can be selected to suit individual operational requirements.

Our fixed centralised vacuum systems can provide pipework from as little as 10 metres up to 3000 metres, either fully fitted by our expert engineers, or as supply only for your own installation.

Dundee Energy Recycling Ltd: Dust & Debris Removal

Dundee Energy Recycling Ltd: Dust & Debris Removal

Dundee Energy Recycling Ltd: Dust & Debris Removal

Project information

Project: Dust & debris removal
Client: Dundee Energy Recycling Ltd
Products: CompVAC & BagVAC

Project Background

DERL is a pioneer in converting consumer and commercial waste into energy. One of the biggest challenges when dealing with and handling consumer and commercial waste is that even when you’ve got it into the waste processing system, there’s a lot of dust and debris, and still more from the ‘flock’ that’s generated as it’s processed.

While this in itself is one thing, making sure you stay on top of it and keep the dust, debris and such cleaned up from around the incinerator and the site is critical, especially as there are high H&S and environmental standards like SEPA’s (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) and DSEAR to meet on a regular basis. That means making sure everything is in pristine condition, as far as possible, or your operating licence is at risk.

The solution

To manage the dust issues around the incinerator, DERL originally purchased a DISAB CompVAC which can easily be taken around the site using a forklift. Our powerful industrial vacuum was ideal for the quantities of dust and debris around the site. More recently DERL has hired a BagVAC, effectively a CompVAC with legs to accommodate a one tonne bag underneath, which has its own advantages when it comes to handling and emptying the tonne or so of dust and debris.

“The dust and debris issue had to be resolved, so we looked at various ways to do this. We’d been using brooms, brushes and barrows, and shovelling the waste and dust into bins, but it was completely unsatisfactory, making more airborne dust each time.”

We were shown how effective the DISAB CompVAC was, and ordered one. We also made sure the sales engineer who came along got a very clear understanding of where the dust and waste was gathering, and which all needed to be accessed and cleaned up.”

Mervyn Thomas

Operations Manager , Dundee Energy Recycling Ltd

Product Features

DERL found that the CompVAC is a fantastic mobile dust management solution that can be forklifted at ground level and hooked up to a power point, where its flexible hose is then attached to the ground floor valve.

The Compvac has allows DERL operatives to manage cleaning in whichever level they need to work in and with the CompVAC switched on, more than enough suction is available to clean up all the dust and debris, all of which was sucked down to the CompVAC’s hopper.

Product Overview

  • Removed manual dust processes
  • Saves time and energy
  • Helps DERL meet stringent H&S and environmental standards /li>

Lafarge Plasterboard: Plasterboard Dust Cleaning

Lafarge Plasterboard: Plasterboard Dust Cleaning

Lafarge Plasterboard: Plasterboard Dust Cleaning

Project information

Project: Plasterboard Dust Cleaning
Client: Lafarge Plasterboard
Products: SKIPVAC®

Project Background

Lafarge Plasterboard’s key priorities include social responsibility, innovation and sustainable development, and so issues like Health & Safety and the working environment are taken seriously at every level throughout every part of the Group. Lafarge Plasterboard’s Ferrybridge site is a good example, and it was part of their Keystone project to encourage ideas from the employees that led to a much improved solution for housekeeping and waste management.

The solution

The SKIPVAC comes with a fully enclosed system for handling dust, from nozzle to hopper, and with its highly efficient filtration system, dust is completely contained and easily disposed of wherever required. The SKIPVAC is easily moved around using a forklift, and can be powered from any local 32 amp socket.

Each level of the Preparation Area at Ferrybridge also has its own length of flexible suction hose, and cleaning dust has now become a simple matter of connecting the hose to a suitable inlet valve. With the appropriate nozzle and a special 2” extension from Disab UK, cleaning up and removing the dust build-up from floor areas and nooks and crannies that are awkward to reach, is a simple task. And all this can now be achieved easily and far more efficiently, with no manual handling risks for the operatives concerned.

“The SKIPVAC system’s very easy to use, and we’re now achieving a much cleaner, better workplace and environment as a result. The employee morale is higher, and they can see a direct benefit from their original submission of the Keystone project to the way they’re now working. They’ve been able to make general regular housekeeping tasks much easier and quicker to fulfil, and are much more willing to do these tasks.”

“Thanks to the SKIPVAC and the improvements that have been made to the existing pipework system, we can all see the difference to the working environment, something which our operatives really appreciate. From my H&S perspective, it also minimises the manual handling issues, so I’d say the Keystone project has been very worthwhile.”

Cally Bristow

Health & Safety Manager, Lafarge Plasterboard

Callow Rock Quarry: Aggregate Dust Solution

Callow Rock Quarry: Aggregate Dust Solution

Callow Rock Quarry: Aggregate Dust Solution

Project information

Project: Aggregate Dust Solution
Client: Aggregate Industries
Products: DISAB BagVac

Project Background

At the Aggregate Industries’ Callow Rock Quarry, thousands of tonnes of limestone are quarried and processed down to dust and up to 20 mm for aggregates and concrete products. The resulting dust and spillages need to be cleaned out every week from around the plant and equipment, especially the secondary process plant, most of which can then be re-cycled into market-ready product.

At Callow Rock Quarry the HSE guidance about vacuuming rather than sweeping and using brooms and brushes has long been regarded as standard practice, and was the reason for getting the BagVac over a decade ago. While Aggregate Industries pioneered this approach, thanks to attitudes to HSE changing dramatically throughout the industry, for many using a Disab Industrial Vacuum is now normal practice.

As the dust settles everywhere, anything above floor level presents a serious H&S problem if it was brushed or swept rather than vacuumed away. This is highly relevant to the operation at Callow Rock Quarry as some of the plant goes up to five storeys.

The solution

Putting the BagVac’s vacuum power to work, five storeys up

The Callow Rock Quarry operation has been using a DISAB BagVac for 10 years, and with regular servicing, the unit’s still going strong and helping the team remove around a tonne or two a week of limestone dust and spillages from around their plant and site.

When the BagVac was first rented, it was soon realised a fixed pipework system was needed along with multiple inlet valves, so that the BagVac could power the pipework system with the vacuum, and operatives only needed to plug in their flexible hose and cleaning head to deal with the dust wherever they found at whatever level.

Consequently, all the waste material collected is sucked down into a handy one tonne collection bag, and can be tipped back into the process that turns the materials into finished product.

“It’s easy to use, the servicing and support is very good, and as we’ve been using our BagVac for 10 years and longer, it’s incredibly reliable as well.”

“When it comes to servicing, we’ve found that the annual service performed on site is always very good, and the response from any calls we may need to make to the DISAB UK office is always very proactive as well. It’s these sort of details that make all the difference when you reckon up which company you want to go with!”

Reg Minty

Works Engineer, Aggregate Industries
