Project: Dry recyclable material removal
Client:  Norfolk Environmental Waste Services
Product: DISAB Centralised Vacuum System

Project Background

Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) operates the Costessey materials recovery facility, which handles up to 100,000 tonnes of dry recyclable material a year. Dealing with all of this material, over 75% of which is paper and card, means that there is a lot of dust generated through the separation process. As the plant operates to a rigorous regime of quality, environmental and safety standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001), the engineers at NEWS decided that they needed a solution that was as advanced and effective as their own recycling and processing plant.

The solution

Trialling a DISAB SkipVac™ for 6-months proved that a vacuum-based approach to dust was the right technical solution. However, cleaning the two-storey plant needed even more flexibility, ideally feeding all of the collected dust directly back into their waste bay. So, after conducting a full site survey, we recommended a Centralised Vacuum System based on inlet valves around each storey fed by 100 metres of 102mm pipework with massive suction power provided from a DISAB PacVac.

All of the waste and dust collected went via the 102mm pipework to a DISAB separator in the waste grading area and fed directly into the waste bay. The Centralised Vacuum System is also fully enclosed from nozzle to separator, minimising any dust exposure issues within the plant itself. This all adds up to a working environment where operatives don’t need to wear masks all the time, which is far more preferable.

“The DISAB SkipVac did a great job of proving our point about installing a vacuum system. By comparison,  the new Centralised Vacuum System has been tailor-made for our plant to give us maximum flexibility, more suction power and a direct feed for the dust, depositing it into our waste bay.”

“With 4 inlet valves around the ground floor and another 5 on the first storey, the cleaners who are scheduled to clean up after each of the two main 8-hour shifts only need to carry a suction hose to wherever they need it, attach it to a suitable valve, and carry on cleaning. With an extension pipe and special nozzles, this is now part of their scheduled daily cleaning routine. They now use the Centralised Vacuum System to clean in and around the cabins on the first floor as well, so they no longer need to haul smaller vacuum machines around with them.”

Project: Dry bulk storage cleaning and spillage removal
Client:  Solent Stevedores
Product: DISAB CompVac

Project Background

Handling millions of tonnes of cargo and over 250 cruise vessels annually, Solent Stevedores operate The Southampton Bulk Terminal within the Port of Southampton, one of the UK’s busiest and most important ports. Over recent years Solent Stevedores has been asked to receive, handle, store and load out a vast array of cargoes and shipments of dry bulk commodities, primarily grain and animal feeds, but fertiliser, gypsum, recycled glass and metal, salt, soil, sugar and wood products also form part of the annual volume handled. So the vacuum unit had to handle all these types of materials, besides grain.

The 100,000 tonnes of grain handled annually for the milling, brewing and feedstock industries requires an 8,000 sq metre TASCC approved storage facility to accommodate export cargoes prior to shipment. Keeping this clean and up to TASCC standards, as well as meeting the various external inspections carried out by customers, is a major task. This used to be done manually using brooms, brushes, barrows and shovels, and not surprisingly was one of the least popular and most back breaking of tasks.

So, berth managers Doug Webb and Jerry Board decided to search for a 21st century solution to their cleaning and spillage removal challenges, and hired in the DISAB CompVac.

The solution

The storage facility had to be maintained to a high standard in order to comply with the standards required by TASCC, UFAS and ISO 14001 but cleaning up of the grain and animal feeds was carried out manually, and inevitably made it’s way into hard to reach places that couldn’t be reached with a brush. Dust removal was therefore a major headache, and cleaning spillages was a very laborious and time consuming job when using shovels, brooms, buckets and barrows.

The DISAB CompVac provided a far more efficient way of doing things. The CompVac comes complete with a 60 foot flexible suction hose, cleaning nozzles and extension tubes to make cleaning large areas simple, and the powerful 16.5kw electric motor produces the kind of suction power that easily removes materials like grain and dust into its spacious internal hopper. The DISAB CompVac is also easily portable with a forklift, creating enormous flexibility and with optional cleaning kits for overhead areas, any awkward nook or cranny is within easy reach.

“Our operatives were very impressed by the DISAB CompVac. It’s a very good piece of machinery for dealing with dust and spillages, and of course it saves them both a lot of time and the back breaking chore of shovelling and brushing the dust and waste grain.”

“We’ll certainly be using use the DISAB CompVac again.”

Jerry Board

Berth Manager, Solent Stevedores

Product Features

The CompVac’s high suction capacity together with its flexible discharge system makes the unit very useful in most vacuum cleaning situations and is the perfect choice when large amounts of material needs to be vacuumed.

Due to its flexibility the CompVac also gets into difficult areas where cleaning needs to be carried out without the use of fixed pipe network.

The CompVac can be used as a free standing suction unit with the connection of 2”, 3” and 4” hoses and the unit is also suitable for fixed installations, connected to a fixed installed pipe system with multiple suction outlets.

Jersey Recycling

Project information

Project: Flue Gas Treatment Ducts Maintenance
Client:  State of Jersey
Product: DISAB BagVac

Project Background

Being an island with no space for landfill and a requirement to follow the highest environmental and air pollution standards, the State of Jersey has been practicing a refuse, recycling and incineration strategy for nearly 40 years. The Island’s combustible solid waste is incinerated at the La Collette Energy from Waste (EfW) plant which is able to process over 105,000 tonnes of non-inert waste per year. Once as much of the refuse is recycled as possible, the La Collette plant burns the remaining waste using the heat to drive a steam turbine to generate 10MW/Hr of electricity at full production.

Cleaning out the Flue Gas Treatment Ducts

A regular requirement is to clean out the Flue Gas plant, for which the original two inch centralised pipe work system was simply inadequate as the FGT residue built up on the heat exchanger pipe work and required manual removal by operators using breathing apparatus and PPE equipment to ensure safety. This was an arduous and slow job and a solution was required.

The solution

We were asked to provide a more efficient solution. The BAGVAC with it’s powerful suction in combination with a 4” pipe work system and inlet valves provided exactly what Ian and his team required.

“It used to take them approximately 4 days to clear around five cubic metres of FGT residue, a process repeated every 3 to 6 months using two men. Using the new BAGVAC system, the FGT ducts themselves were cleared in just two days. Some five cubic metres of FGT residue were removed, simply and easily into bulk bags which were safely disposed of in a hazardous landfill site.”

“DISAB’s mechanical installation team did a superb job, very fast, efficient and with the full and correct paperwork. They also did a good job with the wiring and with the operatives’ training, so we were able to put the system straight to work on blocked flue gas treatment ducts. An excellent job all round.”

Ian Coupland

Waste Management Project manager , State of Jersey

Allglass: Airborne dust reduction

Allglass: Airborne dust reduction

Allglass: Airborne dust reduction

Project information

Project: Glass-based airborne dust and surface dust removal
Client:  Allglass Reprocessors UK Ltd
Products: DISAB CompVac

Project Background

Since 2006 Allglass used manual techniques such as brooms, brushes and barrows to remove. This was a laborious task and whilst it worked for larger glass particles, the manual approach generated a lot of airborne dust particles.

Allglass has been working closely with the H&S Executive on the standards their sites needed to achieve in terms of the removal of both glass-based airborne dust and surface dust. Allglass soon recognised it was going to need a much more effective cleaning capability than its traditional manual approach.

The solution

Allglass acted on advice from the HSE and arranged a demo of, and then hired, a DISAB CompVac. Its vacuum power and capacity transformed the way they dealt with dust removal and thus exposure risks. Instead of sweeping and brushing, particles as fine as 10 microns up to 8mms were being sucked up with minimal effort and collected in the DISAB CompVac’s large internal hopper.

“The DISAB CompVacTM is much faster than brushing and shovelling, but more to the point, it’s a far more effective solution to our achieving the lowest exposure limits we can. With brooms and brushes there was a lot we couldn’t do – the DISAB CompVac’s changed all that.”

“We now pass the H&SE’s spot checks with flying colours, and more importantly, we’re achieving really low MEL targets. That is much better and safer for all those who are in our working and production environments.”

Kevin Lamont

PLant Manager, Allglass Reprocessors UK Ltd

Product Features

From the cleaning nozzle to the hopper the whole of the CompVac system is fully enclosed, eliminating the risk of any of the collected dust escaping into the atmosphere, helping companies meet H&SE targets.

The DISAB CompVac provides the suction power and ability to vacuum in the hard to reach nooks and crannies where dust builds up.”

Tata Steel: Steelworks Cleaning

Tata Steel: Steelworks Cleaning

Project information

Project: Steelwork waste removal
Client: Tata Steel
Products: SkipVac

Project Background

As one of the world’s leading steel producers, Tata Steel is committed to high standards of safety and environmental protection. Its Hartlepool site covers an area equivalent to 50 football pitches, and the plant cleaning and housekeeping programme requires an eight hour shift every weekend, part of which has to deal with the large amount of waste from the submerged arc welding machines and operations in several separate locations.

Traditionally all this was carried out manually using brooms, shovels and barrows but it’s an inefficient way to sweep up and collect all the flux slag and granules, especially from within and around the submerged arc welding machines.

Tata’s production team previously tried various other cleaning machines, but found that these other units would block up and break down, and insufficient capacity meant they would spend more time emptying them than cleaning up.

The solution

Following a free demonstration it was clear that the DISAB SkipVac was exactly the sort of cleaning solution they’d been looking for.

The SkipVac allows the production crew to clean in awkward places such as around the arc welding machines, down the pits and around the cable trays and conveyor. The DISAB SkipVac’s suction power means an operative can, with the various extension pipes and cleaning heads, do a much better job of cleaning all of these areas.

“The DISAB SkipVac is an excellent machine that’s got capacity, reliability and is easy to empty. It’s also easy to move around with a forklift. It handled 2-3 tonnes of flux slag quite happily and didn’t need emptying every five minutes. But what we really liked was its suction power.”

“One of the SkipVac’s best features is the easy way it’s emptied out. It’s just a matter of getting a forklift to lift the top section away from the DISAB SkipVac hopper, and then taking the hopper to wherever the waste needs to be disposed of. It’s safe and simple, and presents no risk to the operatives.”

Andrew Ward

Production Operations Manager, Tata Steel
